Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla, N.Y., said it is laying off 110 workers, from secretaries to nurse supervisors to the director of surgical services, to save $8 million this year. The 996-bed hospital faces a $30 million deficit, officials told the Associated Press. Almost all of the workers are union members. Elsewhere in the Northeast, at 249-bed Washington (Pa.) Hospital, 79 employees in clinical and nonclinical areas lost their jobs. Officials did not disclose to the AP the size of the hospital's deficit but said they did not expect further layoffs. Last fall the hospital postponed a $54 million expansion and laid off about one dozen workers. -- by Cinda Becker
