Health Net, Woodland Hills, Calif., will close its commercial health plan in Pennsylvania by Sept. 30 and pull out of the state's Federal Employee Health Benefit Plan on Dec. 31, in a continued effort to pare unprofitable operations. The move will affect 32,000 members. The company will maintain its physician and hospital network in the state so its 1.1 million members in neighboring Connecticut, New Jersey and New York can continue to access eastern Pennsylvania providers. Health Net, which covers 5 million people in 15 states, has exited a number of Medicare HMO markets nationwide and reduced its commercial business in Arizona over the past year. A spokeswoman said the Pennsylvania business was unprofitable. -- by Laura B. Benko
