"Republican lawmakers may sabotage President Bush's healthcare plan. Bush wants to reform Medicare and use the savings to pay for a prescription drug benefit for seniors. This is the only way of providing drug coverage for seniors without burning a hole in the federal budget. But some squeamish Republicans are floating proposals that will break the link between drug coverage and Medicare reform. If Bush cannot persuade his own party to stay the course on reform, he should table the idea for now. He cannot allow himself to be drawn into backing a spending program that the federal budget can't support."
