Following is a less-than-exhaustive list of business opportunities for doctors and skills that will help them do something new.
Hospitals: Depending on the setting, analytical M.D.s with operational know-how continue to be valuable as CEOs and in other management positions.
Managed care: There are continuing opportunities for medical directors, managers of quality and general management positions.
Medical device makers/suppliers: For the entrepreneurial or inventor type, device manufacturers are doing better in terms of venture capital than the telecommunications industry. Seasoned clinicians also are valuable for testing the feasibility of a product in practice, marketing and opening doors to potential clients.
Biotechnology: This sector continues to do well and needs clinicians with research and scientific abilities to develop projects.
Traditional pharmaceutical companies: In addition to bench scientists with proven track records, drug developers are looking for physicians skilled at working with government agencies.
Consulting: Doctors can be near the action of healthcare delivery without actually providing it.
