Only 53% of emergency department charges were paid in 1998, down from 60% in 1996, largely because of a decline in the rate of payment from private insurers, according to a new study published in today's Annals of Emergency Medicine. While Medicaid and Medicare payment rates remained stable, the percentage of bills for privately insured patients that were paid fell to 63% in 1998 from 75% in 1996.
