J.D. Power and Associates, Westlake Village, Calif. -- a familiar name in customer-satisfaction awards for the automotive industry -- is entering the healthcare arena in a partnership with HealthGrades, Lakewood, Colo., which publishes the Web ratings of more than 5,000 hospitals. The companies will sponsor an award equally recognizing customer service and clinical performance, said Steven Wood, executive director of J.D. Power's healthcare division. Full-service hospitals scoring in the top 20% nationally on HealthGrades' measures will be considered for the award. Quality-related hospital recognition programs have proliferated in recent years. Bestowers include the American Hospital Association, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and private companies such as Solucient and the National Research Corp. -- by John Morrissey
