Veteran hospital executive Tyree Wilburn, 50, was named president, CEO and chairman of Denver-based for-profit startup Merit Health Systems last month. Wilburn replaces Rick Pajot, who stepped down for personal and health reasons. Wilburn was an initial director and founding investor in Merit, which owns 213-bed Grant Hospital in Chicago. ... Melinda Clark, 46, president and CEO of SSM Rehab in St. Louis, has been named president of SSM DePaul Health Center in Bridgeton, Mo., replacing Robert Porter, who was promoted to executive vice president of strategy and business development for parent SSM Health Care, St. Louis, last June. ... Cheryl Scott, 53, president and CEO of Group Health Cooperative, Seattle, has been elected chairwoman of the Alliance of Community Health Plans, Washington, succeeding Art Goshin, president and CEO of Excellus-Univera Healthcare, Buffalo, N.Y., who served as chairman for five years. ... Normand Deschene, 48, has been promoted from COO to president and CEO of Lowell (Mass.) General Hospital, succeeding Robert Donovan, 58, who will focus on his role as CEO of parent Lowell General Corp. ... Richard Liekweg, 42, has been named CEO of University of California San Diego Medical Center, replacing Sumiyo Kastelic, who had served as CEO since 1997. Liekweg was a Modern Healthcare "Up & Comer" in 2001. ... Robert Laskowski, 50, has been named president and CEO of two-hospital Christiana Care Health System, Wilmington, Del., succeeding Charles Smith, who is retiring in June. Laskowski, a physician, is chief medical officer at 575-bed Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network, Allentown, Pa. The appointment reflects a trend of doctors becoming hospital CEOs (Sept. 30, 2002, p. 6).
