You can tell healthcare chief executive officers who are totally into information technology from those who give it lip service. They carry pagers, cell phones, headsets and laptops. They look like a RadioShack exploded around them. They send you e-mail messages at all hours of the night from locations around the globe. They may ask you to leave a cookie in their browser, and it's not even Christmas!
But now there's another way to tell when a healthcare CEO is totally into information technology. And that's if he or she is the recipient of the new CEO IT Achievement Award co-sponsored by Modern Healthcare and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society. Modern Healthcare Publisher Charles S. Lauer and HIMSS President and CEO Stephen Lieber will announce the new recognition program this week in San Diego at the HIMSS 2003 Annual Conference & Exhibition.
The annual award recognizes one or more healthcare industry CEOs who demonstrate leadership and commitment to using information technology to advance their healthcare organization's strategic goals. The award is open to CEOs of any type of healthcare organization, including hospitals, health systems, physician group practices, post-acute-care facilities, health insurers and state and federal healthcare agencies. The award is not open to information technology vendors or consultants.
Modern Healthcare and HIMSS will convene a panel of experts to judge the competition; CEOs of organizations whose executives sit on the judging panel are ineligible for the award. Nominees will be judged on three main criteria:
* Has the CEO demonstrated leadership and commitment to using information technology to advance his or her healthcare organization's strategic goals?
* Has the CEO helped achieve measurable results through leadership and commitment to information technology in his or her organization?
* And has the CEO shared his or her healthcare organization's experiences to benefit peers and other members of the healthcare industry?
The nomination deadline for this year's CEO IT Achievement Award is March 10. You can pick up a nomination form at Modern Healthcare's booth at the HIMSS show, or get an electronic copy at modernhealthcare.com or himss.org. If your CEO can't retrieve a copy from either Web site, they're ineligible for the award. Just kidding, but that would separate true believers from imposters, wouldn't it?
Modern Healthcare will announce the winner or winners of the inaugural award in our April 14 issue. We'll profile the winner or winners in a special supplement to the June 9 issue. And Modern Healthcare and HIMSS will honor the winner or winners at the HIMSS 2003 Summer Conference June 9-10 in Chicago. Good luck to all entrants!
