Faced with a year-end lapse in malpractice coverage, a group of obstetricians at the University of Louisville has been offered new policies by another company -- at a steep price.
Academic Health Professionals Insurance Association, a New York company, has offered the 26 physicians a 90-day policy at an annual rate of about $200,000 more than they were paying to the Doctors Co., a California insurer that announced two weeks ago that it had stopped writing policies in Kentucky.
The company is reconsidering its decision after complaints by the obstetricians, who handle all the births at University Hospital, delivering about 200 babies per month, mostly for low-income women. The group is also responsible for the training of residents and medical students. -- by Michael Romano
