Plans for Health Management Associates, Naples, Fla., to acquire 133-bed Madison County Medical Center, Canton, Miss., were dealt a blow by the Mississippi Department of Health, which denied a request to transfer 67 beds from the hospital to HMA's Central Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson. HMA agreed in March to acquire the Madison County hospital for $9 million, partly on the condition that county supervisors secure a bed transfer to the Jackson hospital, according to the Associated Press. HMA planned to operate a 22-bed hospital in Canton. County supervisors hadn't decided whether to appeal, the AP reported. HMA officials could not be reached for comment. -- by Cinda Becker
