Kansas Attorney General Carla Stovall moved to delay the $1.1 billion sale of Health Midwest, Kansas City, Mo., to HCA, Nashville, until she can review all aspects of the deal and asked a court to place the not-for-profit health system's assets in trust. In her response to a petition Health Midwest filed last month in Johnson County (Kan.) District Court, Stovall said she wants proceeds of the sale turned over to a new organization and authority to appoint the organization's board. A Health Midwest spokesman said the system is reviewing the filing. Health Midwest, which operates hospitals in both Kansas and Missouri, asked the Johnson County court and Cole County (Mo.) Circuit Court for guidance on its responsibilities regarding the sale proceeds. Meanwhile, Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon is seeking to dissolve the not-for-profit corporation and replace its board. -- Patrick Reilly
