Ascension Health, St. Louis, completed its acquisition of Carondelet Health System, also based in St. Louis, adding eight acute-care hospitals to bring its total to 67 in 20 states. The deal was announced in June. Ascension didn't pay cash for Carondelet but agreed to take responsibility for $250 million of Carondelet's debt. Carondelet lost money in each of the past three years. As a result of the deal, Ascension boosted its assets to $10.4 billion and its annual revenue to about $8.5 billion. Carondelet's sponsor, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, will become the sixth sponsor of Ascension. -- Patrick Reilly
