Health Midwest, Kansas City, Mo., has filed petitions in Cole County (Mo.) Circuit Court and Johnson County (Kan.) District Court seeking guidance on the system's proposed $1.1 billion sale to HCA, Nashville, and what to do with the proceeds. In a news release, Health Midwest said public hearings conducted by the attorneys general of Kansas and Missouri have brought forth dozens of plans, many of them contradictory, for the estimated $800 million healthcare foundation that is expected to result from the sale. The petitions seek to clarify the fiduciary responsibilities of the Health Midwest board in regard to the proceeds, the system said. One public hearing was held in each state last week. Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon will conduct another hearing tonight in Independence, Mo. Kansas Attorney General Carla Stovall will conduct her second hearing on Dec. 6 in Iola, Kan. -- by Vince Galloro
