Jeannette (Pa.) District Memorial Hospital has agreed to an affiliation with two-hospital Pittsburgh Mercy Health System and its parent, Catholic Health East, under which 137-bed Jeannette will become a subsidiary of Mercy and a component corporation of CHE. Officials said the affiliation is not structured as a merger but will give Mercy control of Jeannette's assets and operations. Jeannette will continue to be sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, and the Jeannette Hospital Foundation will remain a separate organization. Officials said there are no plans to eliminate services or reduce staff, and they are actively recruiting to fill several hundred open positions at the hospitals. As part of the deal, Mercy will assume $6 million of Jeannette's debt, the Associated Press reported. The deal, subject to state and court approval, is expected to close by year-end. Officials have said the affiliation was driven by the desire to strengthen Catholic healthcare in the region. -- by Cinda Becker
