HHS' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality awarded a $5.9 million, two-year contract to a small, woman-owned business, Kevric Co., Silver Spring, Md., to develop a Web-based system to integrate patient-safety data from across the government. The system initially will link the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Healthcare Safety Network and the Food and Drug Administration's adverse events reporting systems. Ultimately, the common system will include all safety-related systems operated by the CDC, the FDA, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs, state health departments and other safety-related groups, such as the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. -- by Julie Piotrowski
