HHS launched its national Nursing Home Quality Initiative, aimed at improving quality of care at nursing homes and making quality information about specific homes more readily available to the public through Nursing Home Compare, a section of Medicare's consumer Web site. The site includes data on 10 quality measures for every U.S. nursing home. The overall initiative also involves greater quality-improvement assistance for nursing homes from quality-improvement organizations. HHS officials said state and local long-term-care ombudsmen will use the quality data to help consumers make better decisions about placing family members in nursing homes. The 10 quality measures fall into two categories, six for long-term residents and four for short-term patients. Tomorrow the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will publish advertisements in 71 newspapers nationwide that include a sampling of the data. Go to Nursing Home Compare. -- by Julie Piotrowski
