The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has named former HCFA Chief Information Officer Jared Adair to head up the CMS' enforcement of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, an agency source told Modern Healthcare's Daily Dose. Adair is currently director of the CMS' Office of Operations Management; previously, she served as HHS' senior official for HIPAA implementation. Earlier this week, HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson announced that the CMS will be responsible for enforcing some HIPAA provisions, including the required use of standard transactions and code sets to process claims. That regulation became effective on Tuesday unless hospitals and other organizations applied for a year-long extension, which many did. Also, to correct the Oct. 16 edition of this newsletter, HHS' Office for Civil Rights will be responsible for enforcing the privacy regulations under the HIPAA, which takes effect in April 2003.-- by Jeff Tieman
