The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will be responsible for enforcing the healthcare transaction and code set standards that take effect today, as well as the medical privacy rules that were finalized earlier this year, HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson said. The regulations carry out provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. As of today, hospitals that have not filed with the CMS for an extension must use the standards in processing Medicare claims electronically. The CMS said it will create a new office to coordinate its HIPAA enforcement activities. -- by Jeff Tieman
