The House of Representatives passed on voice vote a bill that would reauthorize grants to help communities coordinate the activities of safety net providers and to continue community health centers' ability to participate in the National Health Service Corps. In addition, the bill would allow community health centers to form joint service and purchasing organizations. The vote followed new federal data indicating that the number of uninsured Americans increased by 1.4 million people last year to a total of 41.2 million. -- by Julie Piotrowski
