The Medical Group Management Association will hold its annual conference about a week before the Nov. 7 general election. That could make for an upbeat meeting, to be held Oct. 27-30 in Las Vegas.
"If there is going to be something done to roll back Medicare reimbursement cuts, it is highly likely that it will happen before the election," says William Jessee, M.D., CEO of the MGMA.
"I'm hoping there will be something to announce at the conference."
Technology remains an important component of the agenda. Orthopedist William Mohlenbrock, M.D., founder of San Diego-based clinical software developer Opsion Medical, will present a session on "Managing Clinical Information for Productivity."
His company has developed a program that takes patient-input demographic, insurance and medical symptoms information and puts it directly into EMR and electronic billing systems, streamlining the check-in and interview processes.
But the MGMA is making late additions to its agenda, based on a topic that is commanding the attention of physician practice executives.
"This year, one of the hottest emerging issues is the professional liability issue," Jessee says.
