Coventry Health Care, Bethesda, Md., signed a definitive agreement to acquire Mid America Health Partners, Kansas City, Mo., an HMO and a PPO rental network owned by three area providers. Terms weren't disclosed. The health plan -- owned by Saint Luke's Shawnee Mission Health System, Carondelet Health System and Liberty (Mo.) Hospital -- has about 97,000 commercial and self-funded members, 23,000 Medicare+Choice members and 130,000 members in a rental PPO. Coventry insures more than 2 million people in 13 states and offers PPO rental networks in several of markets. The deal is expected to close by year-end, a Mid America spokeswoman said. In a written statement, Coventry President and CEO Allen Wise said the company would try to expand its Kansas franchise further. -- by Julie Piotrowski
