Essent Healthcare, Nashville, said it has entered exclusive negotiations to purchase 41-bed Deaconess-Nashoba Hospital, Ayer, Mass., from financially troubled CareGroup, which owns five hospitals in the Boston area. Terms weren't disclosed. Essent acknowledged its interest in Deaconess-Nashoba in February when it considered making an offer for another CareGroup facility, 218-bed Deaconess Waltham (Mass.) Hospital. CareGroup later sold the hospital for $8.5 million to a real-estate developer, who is leasing it to a local community board. The local board that oversees Deaconess-Nashoba picked Essent for the exclusive negotiations. The CareGroup board and state regulators would have to approve a final decision on the sale. -- by Vince Galloro
