HHS announced a $2 million grant program to help communities establish the Medical Reserve Corps, part of President Bush's volunteer service initiative, known as the USA Freedom Corps. A community-based program, the Medical Reserve Corps will assist medical response professionals and healthcare facilities during ongoing public health needs such as immunizations and large-scale local emergencies such as influenza epidemics, hazardous materials spills or terrorist acts, HHS said. Members can include current or retired health professionals, social workers and healthcare administrators. Communities may apply for up to $50,000 in grants. -- by Julie Piotrowski
