The Menninger Clinic, Topeka, Kan., which last year dropped plans to relocate to Houston, is nearing a final decision on a partnership, and the board of the esteemed psychiatric center is expected to announce its selection from five finalists after meeting July 11, spokeswoman Nancy Trowbridge said. Menninger began searching for a new partner last summer after the collapse of plans to collaborate with the Baylor College of Medicine and Methodist Health Care System in Houston. The Texas partners reportedly were unable to raise the estimated $200 million in endowment funds promised to Menninger. Trowbridge said Menninger sent solicitation letters to 56 healthcare organizations, asking them to sign a confidentiality agreement if they were interested in pursuing the possibility of an affiliation. She would not disclose how many did so, saying only that Menninger received favorable responses from a "far greater number than we anticipated." -- by Michael Romano
