Halstead (Kan.) Hospital has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection with unpaid bills of about $4.5 million and said it would reorganize. The 126-bed hospital roughly 25 miles northwest of Wichita, Kan., was slated for closure in early 2000 by its then-owner LifePoint Hospitals, but the not-for-profit Hertzler Research Foundation stepped in to purchase it. The hospital lost $460,000 on $9.4 million in revenue in the six months ended June 30, 2001 and again faced closure. Local businessman Leslie Kitchenmaster took over management of the facility and subsequently bought it. In a memo to employees yesterday, Kitchenmaster said the reorganization would occur with minimal impact on employees. -- by Julie Piotrowski
