The Healthcare Financial Management Association launched the second phase of its two-year patient-friendly billing project at its annual meeting in Seattle. The HFMA will form a task force this summer with technology vendors and other healthcare industry and regulatory representatives to develop new guidelines. The HFMA and the Medical Group Management Association also will make efforts to improve physician billing. McKesson Corp., San Francisco, is the first vendor to join the effort as a sponsor. The initial task force worked for more than a year conducting focus groups, examining hospital billing practices and defining best practices. The patient-friendly billing initiative was first announced at the 2000 HFMA annual meeting.
