Privately held Ardent Health Services, Nashville, has bought 84-bed Cumberland Hospital, New Kent, Va., which has both behavioral and acute-care units, from the Brown Schools for undisclosed terms. The Brown Schools, which provides behavioral and educational services for children, also is privately held and based in Nashville. Ardent, formerly Behavioral Healthcare Corp., owns 22 psychiatric hospitals and two acute-care hospitals. Cumberland, near Richmond, Va., is Ardent’s first behavioral hospital purchase since the system’s name change. The sale effectively ended the Brown Schools’ acute-care business, leaving it to focus on providing services to at-risk students, a Brown Schools spokeswoman said. The company sold two psychiatric hospitals and a rehabilitation hospital to Psychiatric Solutions, Franklin, Tenn., last fall.
