In yesterday's Hollywood movies, dice players cried, "Baby needs a new pair of shoes!"
But in tomorrow's Las Vegas, moms may be crying, "Baby needs a new OB/GYN!"
With medical malpractice rates spiraling out of control in burgeoning Clark County, Nev., which encompasses Las Vegas and its environs, some insurance companies have begun offering 25% premium discounts to OB/GYNs who promise to deliver fewer than 125 babies per year, according to a May 8 report in the Las Vegas Sun. Last month, some OB/GYNs in the county stopped accepting new pregnant patients.
The county has 93 practicing obstetricians with an average of 247 births each.
"Do the math," the paper quotes Clark County OB/GYN Society President John Nowins, M.D., as saying.
What mother would want to place that bet?
