The last time I wrote a column for Modern Healthcare was in November 1995, shortly after the birth of my daughter, Alexandra. You may remember her as "Lil' Howling Wolf," so nicknamed because of her ability to cry all night unless you paced the floor with her in your arms. Well, she's got a little brother now. His name is Benjamin, and he'll be 3 in February. He goes by "Shrek" or "Mike" or whatever the name of the lead character in the latest kids' movie. They have a great mom, Jeanne, who has been my loving wife since 1983.
A lot has changed since that last column. In the healthcare industry. In the country. In the world. But one thing hasn't changed, and that's the commitment to editorial excellence that's been the hallmark of this magazine since 1976. That's when Crain Communications acquired the magazine and Charles Lauer became its publisher. I've been a part of it since 1987, when I joined the staff as a reporter, through 1996, when I became news editor, through today, as editor.
By my side throughout have been Neil McLaughlin, Keith Horist and Dave May. Neil has been my copy editor, my news editor and my managing editor. He's the consummate journalist and the voice of reason and wisdom in the newsroom. Keith, our assistant managing editor for graphics, is the heart of the newsroom. He'll size photos, lay out pages and order a birthday cake. Dave, assistant managing editor for features, is our workhorse. There is no job, big or small, that he's not willing to take on and do well. He even runs the coffee club.
But we're also blessed with a great editorial staff. I believe it's the best roster of reporters and editors that we've assembled since I began at the magazine. And it's the best editorial staff of any healthcare business publication anywhere. With Fawn Lopez as our new associate publisher, we expect great things.
Look for more hard-hitting news stories, more in-depth coverage of healthcare business trends and sharper graphics in the issues ahead. Thank you.
