Gordon Sprenger, president and chief executive officer of Allina Health System, Minneapolis, received the American Hospital Association's highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award, during the association's annual meeting in Washington.
The award recognizes lifetime contributions to the healthcare industry. Sprenger, 63, served as AHA board chairman in 1996. He plans to retire from his Allina posts in July.
Allina recently has been the subject of controversy, with the Minnesota attorney general's office accusing its HMO arm of lavish administrative spending and a federal grand jury examining allegations of overbilling at the system's hospitals (April 30, p. 6).
