Matria earnings decline. Matria Healthcare, Marietta, Ga., says investments in its diabetes management business helped reduce earnings for the first quarter by more than three-fourths to $1.1 million, or 13 cents per share, compared with $4.8 million, or 53 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter. However, the year-ago quarter would show a $300,000 loss, excluding a $5.1 million gain from the sale of WebMD shares. Revenue rose 14.3% to $61.4 million. Matria also provides women's health and respiratory disease services.
Humana buying Anthem unit. Humana says it will acquire a Tricare unit of Anthem that provides healthcare benefits to more than 1 million military employees, retirees and their families in nine states, largely in the Midwest. Terms weren't disclosed, but Humana says it expects the deal to add $365 million to its 2001 revenue but have little effect on this year's earnings. The deal doubles the number of people Humana covers for the U.S. military. Humana holds a similar contract covering the southeastern U.S.
