JACKSON, Miss.-Baptist Health Systems will spend about $12.4 million to build a 39,000-square-foot cancer center for inpatient and outpatient services at Baptist Medical Center, officials announced last month. When completed in the spring of 2002, the center will encompass a total of 60,000 feet, including about 21,000 feet of renovated existing space. `'This building will give our patients better access than ever before to their physicians, as well as providing all the services they need in one place," Kurt Metzner, president and chief executive officer of Baptist, said in a written statement.
ANNAPOLIS, Md.-Gov. Parris Glendening has proposed an extra $46 million for state health programs in 2001, partly to prop up the state's financially struggling mental health providers. The package would provide $30 million for mental health providers and distressed psychiatric hospitals. All four of the state's private psychiatric inpatient facilities lost money on operations last year. The package also includes $6.5 million to help low-income seniors pay for prescription drugs.
