President Bush should quickly broaden his 100 days list to include a strong push for overhauling Medicare. The administration has offered ideas about adding a prescription-drug benefit for seniors. Yet it needs to lay the groundwork for retooling Medicare in addition to creating a prescription-drug benefit. The effort to save Medicare's finances from a rendezvous with Chapter 11 took a serious blow...when Senate Finance Committee Chairman Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) told reporters he will not push Congress to overhaul the program this year.
Mr. Bush should challenge Mr. Grassley's stance. ...A range of experts already agrees that Medicare beneficiaries deserve more choices and that more competition would help control the program's costs. Gathering people from left, right and center for a summit could generate momentum....
