In general, 2000 was rewarding for for-profit healthcare providers and payers, as reflected by their respective stock price indexes, although hospital management companies and HMOs have given back some gains in recent weeks. The stock market revalued e-health companies negatively in 2000 and continued to punish PPMs.
Overall, physician compensation is relatvely flat vs. inflation, but specialists' compensation is growing fast. Physicians compensated based on productivity generally are better paid than those who work under mixed productivity/salary compenstation plans.
