I want to explain and clarify the $5.7 million loss for 1998 that was reported for the American Nurses Association ("A range of results--Healthcare groups had mixed financial picture for 1998," Aug. 21, p. 38). Despite what was reported on Form 990, the ANA actually lost $3.7 million for that year. The $2 million difference reflects our financial relationship with our affiliated organization, the American Nurses Credentialing Center, whereby it returns a portion of its earnings to the ANA.
In addition, not all of the $2 million the ANA distributed in grants was for union organizing.
