Amen! Thomas Priselac's articulate and rational Commentary ("Do-it-yourself budget relief," July 17, p. 26) is a clarion "Stop the whining, stop the whining" call. I spoke with a colleague last week whose hospital effected a favorable $20 million-plus bottom-line turnaround. No Hunter Group. No new chief executive officer. No additional money from Medicare. They started collecting their full due on what they billed, canceled unprofitable contracts (duh) and raised prices.
Only in America could healthcare be so terrific and such a mess at the same time. Whatever the solution, how could more dependence on and intrusion by government (that's what comes with increases in government reimbursement) be superior to solving our controllable challenges by using Priselac's strategic checklist, which is based on looking within?
