The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association last week named Scott Serota its president and chief executive officer.
Serota has served as interim president and CEO of the national organization since Jan. 12, when former chief Patrick Hays resigned.
Hays resigned unexpectedly to devote more time to his family and pursue other career opportunities (Jan. 17, p. 8).
Serota, 43, joined the Chicago-based association in 1996 as executive vice president of system development and became executive vice president and chief operating officer a year later. Before that, he was president and CEO of Chicago-based Rush Prudential Health Plans.
The association oversees 47 independent Blues plans that provide health insurance to 74.5 million Americans, about 27% of the U.S. population.
