One-fifth of all health expenditures in 1998, $229.5 billion, went for physician services. Expenditures for physician services are expected to grow at 6.2% per year between 1998-2008, a rate that is quite a bit slower than 1980-1998 but faster than the 1990s. Spending on prescription drugs grew faster than any other personal health category during the past three years and is projected to grow rapidly through 2008. National health expenditures are projected to total $2.2 trillion and reach 16.2% of gross domestic product by 2008, up from 13.9% in 1999.
