AmeriNet, a St. Louis-based purchasing group, reported record buying volume and membership results for fiscal 1999 ended Sept. 30. Purchases rose by $350 million, or 8.5%, to $4.5 billion for the fiscal year. Acute-care hospital membership slipped by 35, or 1.8%, to 1,917 organizations. But total membership in AmeriNet climbed to 11,618, up 42% from the previous year.
WellPoint Health Networks, parent of Blue Cross of California, reported a 20% increase in net income to $71.1 million, or $1.03 per share, for the second quarter ended June 30, compared with net income of $61.7 million, or 86 cents per share, on continuing operations in the year-ago quarter. The Thousand Oaks, Calif.-based managed-care company said revenues grew 16%, from $1.47 billion to $1.7 billion. Enrollment in WellPoint's health plans passed the 7 million milestone, compared with 6.8 million a year ago. During the past 12 months, California enrollment grew by 586,000, or 13.6%, but enrollment fell 14.3% in other states, primarily because of declines in WellPoint's large-group business.
