Two physician practice management firms shed assets in December.
* MedPartners, Birmingham, Ala., and its CHS Management subsidiary sold practice assets to 40 partners of Community Medical Group, Calabasas, Calif., and their management services organization, Progressive Healthcare Systems, which has more than 200 employed and contracted physicians. The price fell short of the $20 million paid for the assets in 1996, said Progressive Chief Executive Marvin Kanter.
Separately, John C. Lincoln Health Network, Phoenix, purchased Talbert Medical Center in Phoenix for $3.1 million from MedPartners and PacifiCare Health Systems. The price includes the assets of a six-physician primary-care practice managed by MedPartners and a 27,500-square-foot outpatient building.
MedPartners said it will close the 15-physician Talbert Friendly Hills Medical Group, Laguna Beach, Calif.
* Specialty Care Network, Lakewood, Colo., agreed to resell assets of four affiliated practices to physicians for about $16.6 million in cash, stock and canceled debt. The company also recast 40-year management agreements with the physicians as short-term contracts, providing fewer services at reduced rates, for which it expects to record a loss of up to $8 million. The company says it is renegotiating deals with most of its 183 affiliated physicians.
