Any nurse executive who goes on the record with a quote like the one attributed to Virginia Frost of Northeast Medical Center Hospital in Humble, Texas ("The nurse rush," Dec. 14, p. 34), should be fired. "Right now we are acutely short of medical-surgical nurses on the regular units. . . . I'm probably short one or two nurses on every shift," she said. I'm sure malpractice attorneys throughout the Houston area are salivating profusely.
Your readers would have been better served by a more thorough examination of the apparent registered nurse shortage in light of your cover story on hospital layoffs ("The quiet restructuring," Dec. 14, p. 2). Left hand, please meet right hand.
