HealthPartners, one of the Twin Cities' Big Three health plans, is yanking its HMO product out of 13 rural counties in Minnesota.
The pullback is effective Jan. 1, said Sara McFee, spokeswoman for the Bloomington, Minn.-based plan. The change will affect about 5,000 of HealthPartners' 786,000 enrollees.
The enrollees include those covered by Medicaid and a low-cost insurance program run by the state, as well as some commercially insured customers. McFee said HealthPartners is losing money in those counties, although specific financial figures weren't available.
Last year HealthPartners reported a net loss of $9.9 million on premium revenues of $1.3 billion (April 6, p. 3).
The company also operates one hospital.
