If Daughters of Charity National Health System merges with another large Roman Catholic system in Michigan, a key to the deal is sure to be a swanky new medical center near Flint, Mich.
Genesys Regional Medical Center at Health Park opened last year. The $115 million facility is the crown jewel of Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Sisters of St. Joseph Health System.
The Roman Catholic sponsors of the Sisters and St. Louis-based Daughters announced last month that they are discussing a possible merger through a huge co-sponsorship deal (June 22, p. 2).
The particulars of what else that deal might involve are unknown.
A pairing of the Daughters and the Sisters would create the nation's largest Catholic hospital system with nearly $8 billion in annual revenues. A merged system would have 64 facilities in 15 states and the District of Columbia.
The Genesys medical center, which includes a 379-bed hospital, is an example of the patient-focused-care philosophy.
The sprawling 807,000-square-foot medical center in Grand Blanc, Mich., with includes a four-story medical office building, is designed both clinically and architecturally to streamline care.
The new medical center is part of Genesys Health System, one of four regional health systems that make up the larger Sisters operation.
Genesys' new medical center replaced four local hospitals in the Flint area. By doing this, Genesys reduced the number of acute-care beds from 1,000 to less than 400, said Elliot Joseph, the new president and chief executive officer of the Genesys system.
The Genesys medical center was the vision of Joseph's predecessor, Young Suh, who retired last year as his pet project struggled with red ink (Aug. 18, 1997, p. 4).
In 1997-the year the new medical center opened-the Genesys system lost more than $4 million on total revenues of $304 million, system officials said. In 1996 it had net income of more than $3 million on revenues of $291 million.
The system is in the black again this year. Through three quarters of fiscal 1998, Genesys had $5.4 million in net income on revenues of almost $228 million.
