PacifiCare Health Systems, Santa Ana, Calif., is planning to exit the Medicare risk market in Utah shortly, sources said last week.
A spokesman for Salt Lake City-based PacifiCare of Utah confirmed that executives with the health plan had examined options for the operation over the past couple of months. An announcement on the fate of the plan is expected June 16, he said.
PacifiCare has 13,500 Medicare enrollees in Utah and about 193,000 enrollees overall. The business was acquired through PacifiCare's 1997 buyout of FHP International.
PacifiCare posted a $78 million loss in Utah last year and has been looking for a buyer for the entire operation since last November.
