Modern Physician is now one year old. Time passes so quickly! A couple of years ago when we began talking about the possibility of starting a new magazine for physician executives, we were filled with enthusiasm for the project. But we couldn't ignore the element of doubt that's inevitably a part of any new project. We conducted research and pulled together focus groups, and many influential leaders urged us to get on with the new publication.
If only good wishes assured success! As many of us have learned the hard way, no matter how much research and focus group data you have telling you to go forward, it can't guarantee success. So as we launched Modern Physician, we were anxious and concerned about reader response.
Our first priority was to recruit good people and to put them in the right positions. The quality of any company or magazine is only as good as its people.
Karen Petitte, then managing editor of Modern Healthcare, was the first person we signed on. Petitte is a well-seasoned pro who helped make Modern Healthcarethe top healthcare business weekly. She not only understands the nuances of this industry, she is well-connected with the movers and shakers in healthcare. She was a natural and she didn't need to be coaxed -- in fact she volunteered for the top editorial job on Modern Physician because she believes physician executives are where the action is, and will be.
Once Pettite was in place, she brought in reporters Bob Cook and Molly Tschida -- each with a background in business and healthcare -- art director Jason Warholic, and copy editors Becky Sloane and Alison Miller. With support from expert writers, some of whom are physicians, the staff has done an outstanding job of creating a quality magazine.
Advertising also has played a crucial part in the success of this magazine. Because it pays most of the bills, we had to find a proven sales honcho who knew not only this industry but had a successful and proven record of sales success. Joe Guerriero, our national advertising sales manager, had proven his metal with an outstanding record at Modern Healthcare. His drive and enthusiasm have carried over to Modern Physician where he has put together an outstanding sales organization that is to be commended for its success.
Special thanks go to the American College of Physician Executives in Tampa, Fla., for its support and encouragement. Executive Vice president and CEO Roger Schenke and his capable staff have given us terrific counsel. We are indebted to them.
Of course, this first year is only a starting point. To be successful, we must continue to give you a clear account of the often-confusing information you need to stay up to date in this industry and to make sense of what the future holds.
So, that's our mission and our vision, and as the publisher I guarantee that we will continue to give you what you need to know to make intelligent decisions about your career as well as your organization.
Our biggest kudos go to you, our readers. You've made it all happen. You are the promise of this great healthcare system and, in some small measure, we hope we can help you make your dreams come true.
Sincerely, Charles S. Lauer Publisher
