An emerging $2 billion Catholic buying powerhouse for 290 hospitals and 127 long-term-care facilities has named John Strong as its chief executive officer, effective next month.
Still unnamed, the Catholic group purchasing organization was spearheaded by the Catholic Materials Management Alliance and Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother-Diversified Health Services.
Shareholders of the 12 separate Catholic systems behind the new group approved its legal incorporation and capitalization, effective April 1.
The new company will be headquartered in the Chicago area and will commence operations July 1. It will employ a staff of 45 by year-end.
A purchasing veteran, Strong, 45, was a senior vice president at Concepts in Healthcare, an Ashland, Mass.-based consulting firm.
"I was really happy doing what I was doing," Strong said. "But I saw this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The values and vision of the organization attracted me, and I have an interest in seeing Catholic healthcare prosper."
In 1997 Strong left Premier Purchasing Partners, the group purchasing arm of the San Diego-based Premier hospital alliance, where he had been chief operating officer.
