Mount Zion Medical and Rehabilitation Center, a Miami-based clinic, agreed to pay more than $1 million to settle charges that it overbilled Medicare.
The clinic, which ceased operation in 1995, was charged with billing for tests not provided as claimed and for services that were not medically necessary.
The clinic and one of its operators, Carmen Hernandez, did not admit to any wrongdoing or liability as part of the settlement with HHS' inspector general's office. MODERN HEALTHCARE learned of the settlement last week under the federal Freedom of Information Act.
Two other operators, Samuel and Jose Luis Hernandez, are fugitives from the law, according to U.S. Attorney Barbara Bisno.
The defendants have been excluded permanently from all federal health programs, according to the settlement.
Other judgments with the clinic's physicians are pending.
