Congratulations on the interesting and comprehensive market profile of the Greater Cincinnati area published in your Feb. 2 issue ("Change in Ohio's big small town," p. 50).
We would like to note, however, that data from Cincinnati's collaborative inpatient measurement project, launched in 1996 with MediQual Systems of Westborough, Mass., indicate that, based on 21 hospital sites, the average charge for a hospital stay was $7,372 in the first six months of 1997 and $7,193 for full-year 1996. This is significantly lower than the $9,962 cost/admission noted in your article. Likewise, the average length of stay was 4.1 days for the first half of 1997, down from 4.2 for 1996. Your article stated the 1996 ALOS was 4.6 days.
Not only are truly collaborative efforts under way in Cincinnati, but these efforts also are yielding results.
