Tenet Healthcare Corp. is now part of the American Hospital Association's inner circle (Jan. 26, p. 2). Bravo! With more than 25 years in the not-for-profit sector, I confess to great happiness with the decision of the people at Tenet to join the AHA. Dr. Frist, are you listening?
Perhaps the mishmash of different healthcare organizations may eventually realize the value of coming together. We all have so much in common. The sad reality is that our often vicious squabbles only serve to make us an easy target for legislators.
Here in Florida, our state hospital association is actively working with the Florida Medical Association. That includes a recent past president of the FMA joining the board of the FHA. This kind of cooperative thinking and action is the only way for us to make ourselves stronger. The "us" I'm referring to represents all healthcare providers, urban and rural, for-profit and not-for-profit, religious, public, private, educational. Everybody.
Speaking with one voice will allow us to better perform our jobs -- taking care of patients and our communities.
