Congress passed a Department of Veterans Affairs spending bill last week that will allow the VA to lease five new outpatient clinics and renovate three existing facilities.
The VA is authorized to spend $34.6 million for strengthening its Memphis, Tenn., medical center against earthquakes.
In addition, the bill authorizes the use of $48 million -- previously appropriated but never spent -- to add 55 VA beds to a 40-bed hospital at Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento, Calif.
The VA bill also authorizes the use of another $7 million in previously appropriated revenues for outpatient improvements in Martinez and Vallejo, Calif.
To lease space for five new outpatient clinics and two information management field offices across the country, the bill authorizes $15.7 million.
